I double-checked to make sure Princess wasn’t eating my bed and found her right where I’d left her, snoring on top of the bone. I carried the plates out to the beach on chairs and a table I’d put out there earlier and Vina carried the wine.

“Sit down,” I said, “let me get those shoes off you so you can stick your toes in the sand.”

She sighed and sat down as I bent down in front of her and wrestled with the straps on her little sandals. My brain had melted when I figured out inside that she didn’t have any panties on, and I hadn’t recovered enough to figure out how to undo the little strappy things.

“Here, let me,” she said, leaning down, sliding her hands past mine. I stayed where I was when I realized she also wasn’t wearing a bra. A gentleman would have told her that her left nipple had slipped out of the silk dress, but I couldn’t do anything but stare, wondering what it would feel like between my fingers, between my teeth, under my tongue.

“There,” she said, pulling the shoes off with a simple flick of her wrist and sitting back up, sending her dress back into place, nipple back out of sight. “I can’t wait to try the fish. Do I just rip the little packet open?”

I got up from my knees, swallowing a groan and said, “Yes, like this,” and pulled the foil apart with my fork sending up a whoosh of fragrant steam. She did the same and giggled with delight. She dipped her fork into the fish and brought it to her lips.

“Oh my gosh, this is so good! I was working so hard today that I skipped lunch.”

“Does it pair well with the wine?” I asked. I knew more about beer than wine but the sommelier at James’s club gave me the recommendation for this Shiraz from the Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard in the Hunter Valley.

She took a gulp of wine and said, “Yes, it is heavenly together! Add in that sunset and my toes in the sand and it is perfect, just perfect.”

Vina sighed happily and I swelled with pride knowing I was responsible for her good mood. Damn, I would do anything to keep her smiling like that. I didn’t want to mess it up, to scare her away again.

“This meal is so good, it makes me want to learn how to cook,” she said, stabbing her fork in the air for emphasis.

“How did your Filipino mother not teach you how to cook a few good meals? The Philippines has amazing food!”

“She was a single mother who cleaned houses for a living and channeled all her hopes and dreams into her only child,” Vina said soberly. “I think she was afraid that if she taught me how to prepare meals, I might turn into somebody’s cook. If she taught me to clean, I might turn into somebody’s maid. Instead, she practically stood over me with a whip to make sure I did well in school.
